The church wardens approached Slip-Not seeking a comprehensive entrance matting solution that would protect both the ancient flagstone floors and the grass pathways connecting the church, community hall, and lychgate. The solution needed to complement the honey-coloured Cotswolds limestone whilst providing practical protection against the mud, moisture, and debris that characterises British weather.

Detailed Solution
Church Entrance Porch
The main church entrance features a traditional stone porch with an ancient flagstone floor. We installed a natural coir entrance mat (1m x 2m x 17mm) that sits within the existing threshold recess. Coir's natural brown tones complement the Cotswolds limestone perfectly, whilst the dense coconut fibres effectively scrape mud and debris from footwear before visitors enter the nave.
For heritage buildings, coir matting offers significant advantages: it's made from 100% natural materials, requires no permanent fixings, and can be easily removed if required for conservation work. The mat is simply maintained with regular beating to remove trapped dirt, or occasional hosing during dry weather.
Lychgate to Church Pathway
The 35-metre grass pathway from the lychgate to the church porch posed the greatest challenge. During autumn and winter months, the route became a mud track, forcing elderly parishioners onto longer paved routes and creating cleaning problems as mud was tracked into the church.
We installed heavy-duty rubber grass mats (1m x 1.5m x 23mm sections) connected with pegs and ties to form a continuous protected walkway. The honeycomb structure allows grass to grow through whilst providing a stable, slip-resistant surface. Crucially, these mats preserve the visual character of the churchyard - from a distance, the pathway appears as healthy grass, yet visitors walk on a safe, clean surface.
Community Hall Entrance
The adjacent community hall, built in the 1960s and renovated in 2015, required a more contemporary solution. We fitted anthracite barrier entrance matting (2m x 3m) in the entrance vestibule. The dark grey colour provides excellent dirt-hiding properties whilst the high-density pile traps dirt and moisture effectively.
