Primary School Playground Case Study: BS EN 1177 Safety Surfacing | Slip-Not
Primary School Case Study: Complete Playground Safety Surfacing Transformation
The completed playground featuring black rubber safety surfacing with colourful activity spots, meeting 2.4m critical fall height requirements
Project Overview
Client: Westwood Primary School, a 420-pupil primary school in Nottinghamshire, needed urgent playground resurfacing after their 15-year-old tarmac surface failed an RoSPA inspection. The project required full compliance with BS EN 1177 impact attenuation standards whilst creating an engaging, colourful environment that could withstand 840 feet during daily break times.
The Challenge: Failed Inspection & Safety Concerns
When Westwood Primary School received their annual RoSPA playground inspection report in January 2026, the results triggered immediate action. The existing surfacing – a combination of ageing tarmac and worn rubber tiles installed over a decade ago – had critical deficiencies:
- Failed impact attenuation testing – HIC (Head Injury Criterion) values exceeded safe limits
- Trip hazards from lifted tile edges and cracked tarmac
- Inadequate coverage under new climbing equipment (installed 2024)
- Standing water pooling in low spots, creating slip hazards
- No compliant surfacing in the early years outdoor area
The school's business manager, Claire Richards, explained the urgency: "The inspection gave us 8 weeks to remediate or face restricted access to the play equipment. With 420 children needing outdoor play every day, that wasn't an option."
Beyond compliance, the school saw an opportunity to transform their outdoor space into an engaging learning environment with zoned areas for different activities and age groups.
Our installation team laying 40mm rubber safety tiles during half-term, completing the main play area in just 2.5 days
The Solution: Zoned Playground Safety Surfacing
Following a detailed site survey and equipment audit, our playground specialists designed a comprehensive surfacing scheme using three complementary products:
Products Specified:
- Black Rubber Play Chippings (20mm) – Under climbing frame (BS EN 1177 certified)
- 40mm Rubber Safety Tiles – Main play areas requiring 2.0m CFH
- Coloured Wet-Pour EPDM Surfacing – Feature areas and activity zones
- Heavy-Duty Safety Flooring – Entrance and transition areas
- Commercial Entrance Matting – School reception entrances
Why Multiple Surface Types?
Each zone in a school playground has different requirements. Our multi-surface approach ensures optimal performance and cost-efficiency:
| Zone | Surface Type | CFH Rating | Area |
|---|---|---|---|
| Climbing Frame | 40mm Rubber Tiles | 2.4m | 120m² |
| Swing Area | Rubber Grass Mats | 1.8m | 40m² |
| General Play | 35mm Safety Tiles | 1.5m | 180m² |
| Activity Spots | Wet-Pour EPDM | 1.2m | 60m² |
| Walkways/Entrance | Diamond Tread Mat | N/A | 50m² |
The Installation: Half-Term Transformation
Vibrant wet-pour EPDM surfacing creating engaging activity zones – the granular texture provides excellent grip even when wet
Installation was scheduled for the February half-term week, giving us 5 working days to complete the full 450m² transformation. Here's how we delivered:
Day 1: Site Preparation
- Removed all existing damaged tiles and loose tarmac
- Ground preparation and levelling with laser-guided equipment
- Installed new drainage channels in problem areas
- Laid aggregate base layer where required
Days 2-3: Main Safety Surfacing
- Installed 40mm rubber safety tiles in climbing frame zone
- Laid 35mm tiles across general play areas
- Fitted rubber grass mats under swing sets
- All tiles adhesive-bonded to prevent lifting
Day 4: Wet-Pour & Feature Surfacing
- Applied coloured wet-pour EPDM to activity zones
- Created circular spots matching school colours (navy/red)
- Installed number trails and compass markings
- Applied anti-slip entrance matting
Day 5: Finishing & Handover
- Edge sealing and joint inspection
- BS EN 1177 compliance testing with ball drop equipment
- Documentation and certificate handover
- Staff maintenance training
Educational Features & Play Value

Beyond safety compliance, the school prioritised play value and educational integration. The wet-pour EPDM surfacing allowed us to incorporate:
Active Learning Features:
- Number grid (1-100) – Embedded in blue/yellow squares
- Compass rose – Teaching cardinal directions
- Target circles – For throwing/catching activities
- Hopscotch courts – Traditional and numbered variations
- Running track lane – Perimeter fitness track
Play Zone Features:
- Quiet zone – Softer green surfacing for calm play
- Ball game area – Durable black surface with court markings
- Imaginative play spots – Colourful circles for games
- Sensory textures – Different surface feels for early years
- School logo – Embedded in wet-pour at entrance
Interior Safety Flooring: Entrance & Corridors
The new entrance corridor featuring 50m² of heavy-duty rubber floor tiles – slip-resistant even with 840 wet feet tracking through daily
The project scope extended beyond the playground to address indoor safety flooring in high-traffic areas:
- Main entrance (20m²) – Diamond tread safety flooring with scraper matting
- Corridor to playground (30m²) – Smooth rubber tiles for easy cleaning
- Cloakroom areas – Water-resistant rubber flooring
These areas see constant traffic during arrival, break times, and departure – often with wet footwear in British weather. The rubber flooring provides:
- R10 slip resistance – Exceeds DfE safety requirements
- Easy maintenance – Mop-clean with standard detergents
- Durability – Withstands trolleys, wheelchairs, and 1,680 shoes daily
- Acoustic benefits – Reduces corridor noise by up to 15dB
Compliance & Certification
All playground surfacing was independently tested and certified to meet:
- BS EN 1177:2018 – Impact attenuation of playground surfacing
- BS EN 1176 – Playground equipment and surfacing requirements
- RoSPA guidelines – Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents
- DfE Building Bulletin 99 – Design standards for schools
The school received comprehensive documentation including:
- BS EN 1177 test certificates for each surfacing zone
- Critical Fall Height compliance statements
- 10-year manufacturer warranty
- Maintenance schedule and product data sheets
