How to Install Stable Mats
Proper stable mat installation ensures horse comfort, easy maintenance, and maximum lifespan. This guide covers preparation, laying, and finishing for equestrian applications.
Before You Start
Calculate Requirements
- Measure stable internal dimensions
- Allow for mat sizes (typically 6ft × 4ft or similar)
- Plan layout to minimise cutting
- Order 5-10% extra for cutting waste
Stable Preparation
- Remove existing bedding: Clear stable completely
- Clean floor: Remove all debris, droppings, urine
- Inspect surface: Check for damage, drainage issues
- Level if needed: Fill hollows with compacted aggregate
- Ensure drainage: Floor should slope slightly to drain/door
Floor Types
Concrete Base (Ideal)
- Clean thoroughly with pressure washer
- Allow to dry completely
- Fill cracks or holes with concrete
- Check for level (3mm over 2m acceptable)
Compacted Aggregate/Earth
- Compact thoroughly
- Level with builder's sand (10-20mm layer)
- Compact sand layer
- Consider geotextile membrane
Laying Stable Mats
Step-by-Step:
- Start at back wall: Work toward door
- Position first mat: Push tightly against walls
- Butt mats tightly: No gaps between mats
- Stagger joints: Brick-bond pattern for stability
- Continue to door: Finish at entrance
Cutting Mats
- Measure carefully: Mark cut line on mat
- Use sharp knife: Stanley knife or specialist cutter
- Score and snap: For thinner mats
- Multiple passes: For thick mats, don't force
Drainage Considerations
- Channel mats: Lay with channels running to drain
- Slight slope: Maintained from back to front
- Door threshold: May need ramped edge mat
Fixing Options
Loose Lay (Most Common)
- Heavy mats stay in place under horse weight
- Allows lifting for cleaning underneath
- No adhesive required
Adhesive (If Required)
- Only needed on very smooth concrete
- Or for horses that dig/paw heavily
- Use rubber-to-concrete adhesive at edges
Post-Installation
- Add bedding: Thin layer of shavings/straw
- Monitor horse: First few days for acceptance
- Check mat positions: Adjust if shifting occurs
Maintenance
- Daily: Remove droppings, check for lifting
- Weekly: Hose down, disinfect if needed
- Monthly: Lift mats, clean underneath, check drainage
