If you're installing playground equipment or safety surfacing in the UK, you need to understand EN 1177. This European standard governs impact-absorbing surfaces and could be the difference between a safe play area and a serious injury claim.

What is EN 1177?

EN 1177 is the European standard for "Impact attenuating playground surfacing - Determination of critical fall height".

In plain English: it tests how well a surface protects a child's head from injury when falling from play equipment.

Key Terms Explained

Critical Fall Height (CFH)

The maximum height from which a child can fall onto a surface without risk of life-threatening head injury. Every safety surface is tested and given a CFH rating.

HIC (Head Injury Criterion)

A measurement of impact severity. EN 1177 testing drops a test headform onto the surface and measures deceleration. HIC must stay below 1000 to pass.

Free Fall Height

The actual height of your play equipment - measured from the highest accessible point to the ground.

Legal Requirements

In the UK, playground safety surfacing is governed by:

  • EN 1176 - Playground equipment standards
  • EN 1177 - Safety surfacing standards
  • Health & Safety at Work Act - Duty of care

Important: For equipment over 600mm high, impact-absorbing surfacing is mandatory under EN 1176.

CFH Requirements by Equipment

Equipment Type Typical Height Minimum CFH Required
Toddler slide 0.6-1.0m 1.0m
Junior climbing frame 1.0-1.5m 1.5m
Standard swings 1.5-2.0m 2.0m
Large climbing structures 2.0-2.5m 2.5m
Zip wires 2.5-3.0m 3.0m

Always add a safety margin - we recommend CFH at least 0.5m above equipment height.

Surface Types and Typical CFH

Surface Type Typical CFH Range
Rubber tiles 40mm 1.3-1.6m
Rubber tiles 50mm 1.6-2.0m
Rubber tiles 70mm 2.0-2.5m
Wetpour 40mm 1.5-1.8m
Wetpour 60mm 2.0-2.5m
Rubber mulch 100mm 1.5-2.0m
Rubber mulch 200mm 2.5-3.0m

Testing and Certification

Legitimate safety surfacing should come with:

  • ✓ EN 1177 test certificate
  • ✓ Stated CFH for specific thickness
  • ✓ Installation guidelines
  • ✓ Maintenance requirements

Warning: Uncertified "rubber matting" may not provide adequate protection. Always ask for EN 1177 certification.

Installation Requirements

  1. Extend beyond equipment - Minimum 1.75m from any fall point
  2. Level sub-base - Uneven surfaces reduce effectiveness
  3. Proper drainage - Standing water affects performance
  4. No gaps - Tiles must be tight-fitting
  5. Edge protection - Prevent tripping at surface edges

Ongoing Compliance

  • Visual inspection: Weekly - check for damage, debris
  • Operational inspection: Monthly - check for wear, lifting
  • Annual inspection: Professional assessment recommended
  • Re-testing: Consider CFH re-testing every 3-5 years
