Understanding Rubber Density

Density affects weight, durability, and cushioning performance. This guide explains rubber density measurements and helps you choose the right specification.

What is Rubber Density?

Density measures mass per unit volume, expressed in kg/m³ (kilograms per cubic metre). Higher density rubber is heavier, typically more durable, but less cushioning.

Density Ranges

Density by Application

Gym Flooring

Recommended: 900-1,200 kg/m³

Medium density provides the best balance of impact absorption and durability for gym use. Weight areas may benefit from higher density for dropped weight protection.

Playground Surfacing

Recommended: 700-1,000 kg/m³

Lower-to-medium density provides critical fall height protection (CFH) while maintaining durability for outdoor use.

Industrial Flooring

Recommended: 1,200-1,600 kg/m³

High density withstands forklift traffic, heavy equipment, and continuous industrial use.

Weight Calculations

Use density to calculate flooring weight:

Weight (kg) = Density (kg/m³) × Volume (m³)

Example: 20mm thick, 1m² tile at 1,000 kg/m³ = 1,000 × 0.02 × 1 = 20kg

Density vs Hardness

Density and hardness are related but not the same:

  • High density + low hardness: Heavy but soft (rare)
  • High density + high hardness: Heavy and firm (industrial rubber)
  • Low density + low hardness: Light and soft (foam-based mats)
