Ultraviolet radiation degrades rubber over time. Understanding UV resistance helps you choose flooring that performs for years in outdoor or sun-exposed applications.

How UV Affects Rubber

UV radiation breaks down polymer chains in rubber, causing:

  • Fading: Colour bleaches and becomes inconsistent
  • Chalking: Powdery residue on surface
  • Cracking: Surface develops fine cracks (checking)
  • Brittleness: Rubber loses flexibility
  • Reduced lifespan: Accelerated wear and failure

EPDM: The Outdoor Champion

EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is the preferred material for outdoor rubber flooring:

  • Inherent UV stability—doesn't require additives
  • Maintains colour for 15+ years
  • Wide temperature tolerance (-40°C to +120°C)
  • Ozone and weathering resistant
  • Ideal for playgrounds, rooftops, and outdoor fitness

EPDM vs SBR Comparison

UV Stabilisers

Some rubbers include UV stabiliser additives:

  • Carbon black: Provides UV protection (why most outdoor rubber is black)
  • UV absorbers: Chemical additives that absorb UV
  • Antioxidants: Slow UV-induced oxidation

Stabilised SBR can extend outdoor life to 8-12 years but won't match EPDM performance.

Recommended: EPDM rubber or EPDM-blend products

Acceptable: UV-stabilised SBR or neoprene

Standard rubber acceptable for most applications. Consider EPDM for areas directly under skylights or large windows.

  • Regular cleaning removes debris that traps moisture
  • Avoid harsh chemicals that may accelerate degradation
