EPDM and SBR are the two most common rubber flooring materials, but they have very different properties. Choosing the right one can mean the difference between flooring that lasts decades and flooring that fails in months.

Quick Comparison

Property EPDM SBR (Recycled)
Price Higher Lower
UV Resistance Excellent Poor
Colour Stability Won't fade May fade/grey
Weather Resistance Excellent Good
Durability 15-25 years 10-15 years
Best For Outdoor, coloured Indoor, budget

What is EPDM?

EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is a synthetic rubber made from virgin materials. Key characteristics:

  • ✓ Exceptional UV and ozone resistance
  • ✓ Maintains colour for 20+ years outdoors
  • ✓ Temperature stable (-40°C to +120°C)
  • ✓ Chemical and water resistant
  • ✓ Available in vibrant colours

Typical uses: Playgrounds, outdoor sports surfaces, coloured safety flooring, rooftop areas.

What is SBR?

SBR (Styrene-Butadiene Rubber) is typically made from recycled car tyres. Key characteristics:

  • ✓ Excellent value for money
  • ✓ Good impact absorption
  • ✓ High durability for indoor use
  • ✓ Eco-friendly (recycled content)
  • ✗ Will fade/grey in sunlight
  • ✗ Limited colour options (usually black)

Typical uses: Gyms, indoor sports, industrial flooring, garages, workshops.

When to Choose EPDM

  • 🌞 Outdoor installations - Won't degrade in UV
  • 🎨 Coloured flooring needed - Vibrant, long-lasting colours
  • 👶 Playgrounds - Safety certified, colour-stable
  • 🏠 Visible/aesthetic areas - Premium appearance
  • Long-term investment - 20+ year lifespan

When to Choose SBR

  • 🏋️ Indoor gyms - No UV exposure, great performance
  • 💰 Budget projects - Lower cost per m²
  • 🏭 Industrial/workshop - Function over aesthetics
  • 🚗 Garages - Black works fine, saves money
  • ♻️ Eco-conscious - Recycled content

Can You Use SBR Outdoors?

Technically yes, but it will:

  • Fade from black to grey within 1-2 years
  • Become harder/more brittle over time
  • Have reduced lifespan (5-10 years vs 15+ indoors)

Our advice: For outdoor use, invest in EPDM. The extra cost pays for itself in longevity.

Price Comparison

  • SBR tiles (20mm): £30-50/m²
  • EPDM tiles (20mm): £50-80/m²
  • Premium difference: ~50% more for EPDM

Over 20 years, EPDM often works out cheaper due to not needing replacement.
