Installing Rubber Grass Mats: Step-by-Step Guide & Tips

Rubber grass mats provide durable, non-slip surfaces for gateways, driveways, playgrounds and more. Installing them correctly ensures they deliver maximum mud control, drainage and safety. This step-by-step guide will walk you through preparing your site, laying the mats, securing them, and performing maintenance.

1. **Prepare the ground:** Clear away any debris, weeds and stones. Level the soil and, if necessary, lay a geotextile membrane to prevent weed growth.
2. **Position the mats:** Starting from one corner, lay out the rubber grass mats with the open-ring pattern facing up. Leave a small gap (1–2 cm) between the edges to allow for thermal expansion.
3. **Secure the edges:** Use cable ties or plastic pegs to connect adjacent mats. Anchor the outer edges with ground stakes or fixings suitable for your surface (plastic pegs for soil or gravel, screws and plugs for concrete).
4. **Top dress & seed:** For grassy paths or playgrounds, brush topsoil or sand through the holes. You can also add grass seed to encourage growth through the mat and lock it into the ground.
5. **Maintain your mats:** Periodically check for movement, top up any infill and remove debris. Keeping the surface clear ensures drainage and traction.
